"I really love hand surgery. The thing that first got my attention and keeps me coming back is the satisfaction that comes from taking a problem, fixing it, and seeing that return of function. I always laugh when patients in clinic tell me that they “really need their hands”, as though most people don’t. But they’re right; we all need our hands. They are a huge way that we interact and engage in the world. It’s pretty stellar that we get to help people get back to their lives."
Dr. Andrew Mitchelson joined Advanced Center for Orthopedics and Plastic Surgery in September 2021. Dr. Mitchelson is originally from a small town in the middle of Illinois. He went to college in St Louis and has a degree in lab science. After graduation, he realized he didn’t want to work in a lab, and spent a couple years doing different things: worked for the Boy Scouts, taught horseback riding, worked as a ER tech. Dr. Mitchelson went to medical school at Southern Illinois University and then stayed there for his orthopaedic surgery residency. He spent the last year in Erie, PA doing a hand and upper extremity fellowship. That was where he learned that he liked snowy Great Lakes towns. As far as what Dr. Mitchelson likes to do, if it’s outdoors then he's down. He's looking forward to checking out all the winter activities that the UP has to offer.
